Journal 2: So, What’s Next?

Through a review of the Eudcause New Horizons Report, I predict how technology will influence education going forward. Technology is developing at a rapid pace, which will have an impact on teaching and learning.

As an English teacher, I envision my teaching evolving significantly in the near and far future as a result of ongoing advancements in technology and changes in higher education. Here are some specific details and examples of how I anticipate my teaching practice transforming:

Blended Learning Environments

In the near future, I expect to incorporate more blended learning approaches, combining face-to-face instruction with online components. This could involve using learning management systems (LMS) to deliver course materials, assignments, and assessments. For instance, I might create interactive multimedia resources, such as online quizzes, videos, and discussion forums, to enhance student engagement and provide additional practice opportunities.

Collaborative Online Projects

With the increasing emphasis on global connections and cultural exchange, I foresee implementing more collaborative online projects. Students could engage in virtual language exchanges with learners from different countries, exchanging ideas, practicing communication skills, and gaining cultural insights. This could involve video conferencing, online discussion platforms, and shared project spaces to facilitate collaboration and foster intercultural understanding.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)

In the far future, I anticipate the integration of immersive technologies like VR and AR into language learning. VR can transport students to virtual environments where they can practice real-life language skills, such as ordering food in a restaurant or navigating a city. AR, on the other hand, can overlay virtual elements onto the physical world, creating interactive language learning experiences. For instance, students could use AR apps to scan objects and receive instant translations or access additional information.

AI-Powered Language Assistants

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, I envision AI-powered language assistants becoming a prominent feature in language classrooms. These assistants can provide instant feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. They can engage in natural language conversations, allowing students to practice their speaking and listening skills in a supportive and interactive manner. AI language assistants can also offer personalized suggestions for improvement based on students' performance data.

Personalized Learning

With the help of adaptive learning technologies, I foresee a shift towards more personalized learning experiences for my students. Adaptive learning platforms can assess individual strengths and weaknesses, adapting content and activities to meet each student's specific needs. For example, I might use intelligent tutoring systems that provide customized feedback and recommendations based on students' performance, allowing them to progress at their own pace.

Lifelong Learning and Microcredentials

Looking into the future, I believe that lifelong learning and Microcredentials will become more prevalent. As technology enables flexible, self-paced learning, I anticipate offering short, focused courses or modules that allow learners to acquire specific language skills or competencies. These micro-credentials can be recognized and valued by employers, providing learners with tangible proof of their language proficiency.

In summary, my vision for the future of my teaching practice involves embracing blended learning environments, personalized learning experiences, immersive technologies, AI-powered language assistants, collaborative online projects, and the integration of lifelong learning opportunities through Microcredentials. By leveraging technology effectively, I aim to create engaging, student-centered learning environments that foster language acquisition, cultural understanding, and lifelong language learning skills.
